Day 4: Hat Trick Velsheda in Command in Cowes

Velsheda took both winning guns for the J Class today at the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Bicentenary International Regatta to remain unbeaten at the historic event, setting themselves into the strongest position to win the class outright.

The dark hulled K7 was on imperious form on what might be considered ‘home waters’. Only at the first mark of the first of today’s two races in the Eastern Solent were they headed by Ranger, otherwise Velsheda lead at each mark of the two, very similar courses of 14 and 13 miles respectively.

Day 4: The start sequence has been completed for all classes

The J-Class yachts were the first to start this morning and are racing in the Eastern Solent along with IRC Zero. Both finish on the RYS line. All other IRC classes are racing in the Western Solent and will finish on the Gurnard line.

Today’s Race Around the Island, part of the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Bicentenary International Regatta, was the first chance for a long awaited sight of the three J-Class yachts getting together to race in the Solent. Day 3:  Velsheda Making History Again

Velsheda, one of the stars of Cowes’ yachting history back in the early 1930s, was the J Class’ shining star of today when they convincingly won the class in the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Bicentenary International Regatta’s 50 miles eastabout Around the Island race in blustery, fresh conditions leaving Falmouth regatta winner Lionheart to second place.

Day 3:  All classes are racing today

The start line off the Royal Yacht Squadron drew a fleet of spectator boats this morning and the crowds gathered on the shore. Class Zero got away on time and all three grand Classics got away to a good start. Mariquita choose to sit on the line stemming the tide, turning to cross it the last minute while Eleonora, with Olympic Gold Medallist Shirley Robertson on board, and Sumuran, took at run at it.
